Among all printing techniques, screen printing has the longest tradition. However, experts disagree on where it first appeared: some point to ancient China or Egypt, while others indicate 4th-century India.
The key advantages of direct-to-garment printing are virtually unlimited color options, photo-like quality, and smooth tonal gradients. The design is printed directly onto the fabric using a dedicated printer, in CMYK plus white.
With this method, the design is first produced as a digital print or screen print on transfer paper or transfer film, and then heat-applied onto the fabric. Different types of films allow effects that are difficult to achieve with direct printing, such as metallic finishes or the ability to dye polyester fibers.
